When I was a young girl, I had a very cheap plastic, fake “pearl” necklace. I felt grown up wearing it. Before long, the shiny plastic peeled off of some of the pearl beads, leaving behind dull plastic instead. The necklace wasn’t so pretty anymore. I didn’t want to wear it anymore.
My mom would always warn me about buying those cheap toys at the store, saying they would break right away, but I didn’t want to wait until I could save enough money for something better. I wanted it now.
I believe this is one reason waiting on God and the fruit of patience is so important in the life of the believer. If we settle for the fake things, the quick fix, for what we desire, then we not only miss out on God’s best for our lives, but we may wind up in hot water due to sins of pride and impatience.
When we take the time to be still before the Lord and practice patience and trust in God, He replaces the fake things this world offers to us with the genuine things of His kingdom and His never-ending, unfailing love.
Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act.
Psalm 37:7a NLT
22But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
